I am not totally sure -- I think it's definitely popcorn and not just any old decorative maize, and may have come (to my work) by way of someone's garden.
Where I work, some people would shove anything in the microwave, just to see what happens to it.
funky popcorn -- do they sell it as popcorn or did it start out as a decorative fall wall-hanging?
