Today's Little Ride

Ok -- So I am a little confused. Is it ok to ride my bike over to Basha's (the nearest grocery store) and lock it up to buy groceries, or not? If it's an ATV it seems it is ok. If it's not ok I bet they don't mind at Safeway.

If it isn't, then why do we have this rack right in front of the sign? Am I the only one confused about this?

I wonder if they'll get upset if I ride my bike right in the freakin' door (which is what I want to do) and fill my panniers with groceries to buy? Is it ok for me to walk into the store?

Todays ride was just 8 miles. and that's a guess.

Good question.

Well, I can answer that since I work in a retail store :-)

They would more then likely frown if you brought the entire bike in the store, but I don't see why you couldn't bring in the panniers and put them in a shopping cart and fill them as you shop.

If they have a problem........money talks and bullshit walks-just tell them you'll spend your money elsewhere.

Retail people figure each household is worth at least 5 grand a year so I'd be surprised if they tell you to beat it.

Do this, don't do that,
Can't you read the sign?

Given the placement of the bike rack, I'd take the sign to mean that they expect you to walk your bike once you reach the sidewalk so as not to be an inconvenience or hazard to other customers. You know, keep kids from crashing into a shopper exiting the store with bags full of groceries.

There are similar signs at our rail stops, where bikes are allowed on the light rail, but for safety reasons you are expected to dismount and walk your bike on the platform (where there's heavy pedestrian traffic).

Ok -- cool. I am sure Gilby is right. On each side of the entry to the store is a sign like that. It's clear to me that bike riding in the entry area of a grocery store is a bad idea, and that the grocery store knows this and wants to reduce their liability. They also want to empower themselves to be able to have kids arrested playing roller hockey in the parking lot at midnight, or hanging around after school with the skateboards.

I don't want to be subject to the same treatment because I am trying to pick up a quart of milk on the way home from work.

What I want is to be able to navigate safely through the parking lot. Get off my bike and either lock it up, or push it through the store (no lock to carry that way) to get a few groceries, buy them and go on my way.

I don't want to be made into a criminal because of that.

"Long haired freaky people need not apply." I am still a bit of a long haired freaky person.

I like the Basha's stores. I don't know why. They're a chain. I was thinking it might be more fun to try to get them to become more bike positive.

I like the idea that we step out in to the community and teach the young people to not ride their bikes through crowds of elderly shopping carts and parents with strollers, rather than act like all bike riders are criminals.
